Say your name + Company + Ask to speak to someone + Please

Ex 1) Hello, this is Robert Smith from ABC corporation, could I speak to Daniel Edwards please?

Today’s podcast focuses on the phrase:

to cut one’s losses  /  損する前に損する事業(取引)を中止する

To cut one’s losses  is to do something to stop losing money.

Let’s looks at some examples:

Ex.1
The product was not selling, so we decided to cut our losses and stop producing it

Ex.2
The corporation decided to cut it’s losses and sold off its unprofitable businesses.

Ex.3
This project is failing, we need to cut our losses, cancel it and move on.

In this week’s podcast we look at the following phrases:

to go bankrupt / to go under 倒産する

When a company has no more money and must stop doing business you can say it went bankrupt or it went under. You can use either phrase to mean the same thing.

Ex.1

a)Zonki corporation went bankrupt last year because of terrible sales.

or

b) Zonki corporation went under last year because of terrible sales.

Ex.2

a) If the company continues to be in the red we may go bankrupt

or

b) If the company continues to be in the red we may go under

In this week’s podcast we look at the following phrase:

to break even / 赤字でも黒字でもない状態

To break even means your income is equal to your costs. In other words  if a person or a business breaks even, they do not make or lose any money.

Ex.1 

1) How’s business? Not great, we just broke even this year.

Ex.2

2) Most new businesses don’t break even until their second or third year

Ex.3 

3)This year our sales were 100,000 dollars but because our   costs were exactly the same  we just broke even.

to be in the red / 赤字

This means to make a loss or lose money in business

in the black / 黒字

This is the opposite meaning of “in the red” and means to make a profit / money

Ex.1

After poor sales and increasing costs, the company went into the red

Ex.2

Thanks to our marketing campaign and increasing sales, we are now in the black
